Damascus steel was named after the fact that it was made from Indian wootz steel and forged into swords and other weapons in Damascus, Syria.
Its greatest feature is the unique pattern that appears when the molten cast steel solidifies in the crucible, and only a few people know how to make it.
During the Crusades, it was prized as a famous sword due to its mysterious beauty and rarity. Today's Damascus steel is a reproduction of this pattern.
